‘Doctors’ actor Kim Rae Won and “Descendants of the Sun” star Song Joong Ki

“Doctors” Korean drama’s ratings continue to rise every week. With the steady increase in its viewership, the new SBS series might even exceed the ratings of the hit KBS show “Descendants of the Sun.”

The hospital-based love story of aspiring doctor Yoo Hye Jeong and mentor Hong Ji Hong has captured k-drama fans since it premiered last June. The characters are played by “The Heirs” actress Park Shin Hye and award-winning “Punch” actor Kim Rae Won.

The show’s interesting plot and evident chemistry between the lead stars have seemingly contributed to the show’s consistently increasing ratings. According to Asia One, “Doctors” gathered over 19 percent in viewership last week.

Data researched by Nielsen Korea showed that “Doctors” Korean drama’s ratings initially started at 12.9 percent on its premiere episode. It then increased to 14.2 percent on its second day.

Kim Rae Won and Park Shin Hye’s love team has been well received by viewers.
Ratings shot up to 18.4 percent just a week later, putting the series on the top spot among competing TV shows like MBC’s “Monster” and KBS 2TV’s “Beautiful Mind.”

The show’s success has surprised even the team behind it. Park Shin Hye’s reps from S.A.L.T. Entertainment said that they were unsure if “Doctors” would be a hit like the actress’ past projects. However, Director Oh Chung Hwan admitted that he had several hesitations with Kim Rae Won’s portrayal of a serious doctor.

If “Doctors” Korean drama continues to perform well, the show might even outdo “Descendants of the Sun” in terms of viewership. The phenomenal wartime drama garnered 38.8 percent in ratings during its finale last April.

KBS is reportedly keen on repeating the show’s success as it is rumored to release “Descendants of the Sun” season two. Production has allegedly begun filming the show’s sequel, which will supposedly air on 2017.

However, the show’s much-anticipated return will be missing an integral part. There have been numerous reports that lead stars Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo will supposedly no longer be part of the show due to conflicts in their work schedule.
